East Coast Tour (13) - Aronoff Center for Design and Art by Peter Eisenman

cin-eisenman-cover.jpg Aronoff Center for Design and Art is an addtion to College / Schools of Design, Architectur, Art, and Planning, University of Cincinnati, designed by Peter Eisenman, completed in 1996.

The program of Aronoff Center is to re-organize 13,400 square meters of existing spaces and add 12,000 square meters of a library, theater, exhibition space, studio space, and office space. It's part of campus master plan of University of Cincinnati.

Aronoff Center sits on hillside/hilltop environment. On the plan it looks like a curvy structure attached to the existing buliding(s). According to Eisenman, his "vocabulary derives from the curves of the land forms and the chevron forms of the existing building; the dynamic relationship between these two forms organize the space between them." Well, I am not sure if I get what he tried to convey, but I do observe its abundance in visual complexity: tilting grid system/planes deviated, reproduced, deformed, and displaced.

The exterior of Aronoff Center is painted pastel pink and cyan. I konw some people like it and think it "adds subtlety and soften the angle" or they like it because it's not like the gray concrete color they saw every day. Some people dislike exterior color scheme. I, personally, don't prefer those colors, either. The quality of construction seems a litte rough in some parts of exterior.

The interior looks visually engaging to me at some angles. Part of reason is probably because I love complexity in architecture. Some people might find it disorienting. For me, I enjoy the concourse of different forces and the visual effects it brings as long as it's proportionally right.

You could see variety of comments about this building. However, I found that a lot of students and faculty there love this building. As Brenda Case Scheer, a professor of urban design and planning in a webpage puts it, "I like it. It's airy and spacious, visually engaging, and reasonably functional. But, most important, it is entertaining to talk about", maybe one of the most successful achievement of Aronoff Center is that it makes itself controversial and provides a lot of stories to tell?

East Coast Tour (12) - Zaha Hadid's Contemporary Art Museum in Cincinnati

Cincinnati-cover.jpg ROSENTHAL CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART

This building is Zaha Hadid's first new project in the United States. Boy, we really visited quite a few of "first US buildings" of some famous "foreign" architects.

Rosenthal Center sits on a small corner lot (about 11,000 square feet) in downtown Cincinnati. The first thing you would notice while approaching the site is probably those boxes floating in the air over the glass base of the building, slightly distinguishing itself from the context. This building may not be as radical/angular as some of Hadid's design, yet it serves well sedately as an attention-drawer for activities it holds inside in an urban setting.

As you enter the entrance, the concrete floor slab runs to the rear of the lobby and continues running upwards after it hits the wall forming a "skateboard halfpipe" in the junction, attempting to lead people to where the black steel ramp starts. Undoubtedly, the ramp circulation is one of Zaha's foci in this building. The ramps are allocated under the atrium, but slightly deviating from each other on each level to create special visual and movement experience.

The museum consists of six floors with children's Unmuseum on the sixth floor. Zaha separates the ramp circulation with the display spaces. Each display space has a slightly different layout. Some critics think one of the most successful examples of architecture and art implementing each other is the exhibition of Inigo Manglano-Ovalle's Cloud Prototype for an Edition of 3 (the first picture of 5th row below) on 4th level while others might have conflicts between architecture and art/installation. The overall quality of this building is good. We like Zaha Hadid!!
Cloud Prototype for an Edition of
Zaha Hadid!! :D
