East Coast Tour (10) - Daytime Chicago 4/5

bridge-cover.jpg BRIDGES IN CHICAGO

Chicago River and its branches roughly divide Chicago into three parts: north, south, and west. Almost every street has a bridge spnning over Chicago River in downtown Chicago area. I didn't know Chicago is famous for its bridges until I did some research afterwards.
Trunnion bascule bridges are doubtless one of the renowned bridge types in Chicago. Trunnion Bascule bridges are named after the their trunnion bearings or pivot and counterweights, which are hidden out of sight (under ground). The city has a schedule for bridge lift to allow boats, ships and barges going into and back from Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, I didn't take that many pictures of bridges, but I'll paste some links to websites showing more photos of bridges of downtown Chicago.

East Coast Tour (9) - Daytime Chicago 3/5

ER-cover.jpg ELEVATED RAILROAD

You could never miss the picture of elevated railroad when you visit downtown Chicago. The yellow-painted steel structure reveal its beauty truthfully via its bold and non-decorative self. Isn't it the authenticity we look for in architecture?
The "L" (elevated railway) we saw today is the result of unification and modernization. In the very beginning, four separate companies constructed these elevated railroads in the 1890's. (Wow!) The history of elevated railroad is deeply rooted in the development of this city. How amazing!
I like the view of elevated railroad of Chicago. I think it brings some sort of sense of history to the city. (although it may be gradually modernized?) What do you think?

tower-cover.jpg Some Downtown Towers and Public Buildings

As title, I am posting some pictures of towers and public buildings in downtown. It's still not a complete image of Chicago downtown, but a record of where we've been. (However, some more photos will be posted later.)

East Coast Tour (7)-Daytime Chicago 1/5

miesian-cover.jpg Miesian Gang ( I know, it's not a proper subtitle...)

I tried to categorize photos of Chicago into several topics, so that I could post them separately and logically, and each article doesn't take me too much time. But, maybe I wouldn't be consistant later. :p

The first group of pictures I want to show you are buildings designed by Mies or influenced by him, such as Chicago Federal Center ( it seems Schmidt, Garden & Erickson, C.F. Murphy Associates and A. Epstein & Sons, associate architects also participated in this case? ), and John Hancock Center designedy by Bruce Graham/SOM. (Hancock building is unique in its sturctural design I know, but other than that, would you say it's also influenced by Mies?)
These photos aren't complete at all. They don't include the IBM building or the Lake Shore Apartments designed by Mies, which are right adjacent to the parking lot we parked for two nights. :p (However, IBM building did show up at previous entry "East Coast Tour (5)" )
The first four pictures below are John Hancock Center, and rest of them are Chicago Federal Center.

Murphy Associates and A. Epstein & Sons, associate architects 設計?), 以及 John Hancock Center ( Bruce Graham/SOM 設計).
Chicago Federal Center.

East Coast Tour (6) - Farnsworth House

IMG_0414.jpg IMG_0415.jpg
Well...we actually didn't get access to the famous Farnsworth House designed by Mies van der Rohe. Although we knew it wasn't open to the public in advance, we still went there trying to get in...unsuccessfully..., so I took these two pictures of surroundings to show you ... WE HAVE BEEN THERE!! :p

Goldfrapp concert

Goldfrapp-cover.jpg 8 Oct 2003 晚上 Can, Juny 伯母, 和我一起到 Henry Fonda Theatre 聽 Goldfrapp 的演唱會.

Can, Auntie Juny, and I wend to Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood for Goldfrapp's concert on 8 Oct 2003.

:DDD )

East Coast Tour (5) - Night Scenes of Chicago

night_scene-s.jpg

I am not quite sure where I took this picture (across Lake Michigan looking at downtown Chicago), but I guess it's somewhere near ADLER Planetarium and SHEDD Aquarium. (Correct me if I am wrong :p)

Okay...
Raymond M. Hood and John Mead Howells 設計.
IBM building - Mies van der Rohe /C.F. Murphy Associates

Getting lazy... I decided to let the pictures talk this time. :D
Give you some hints of what's in the pictures (although you might have already known what they are.)
Tribune Tower designed by Raymond M. Hood and John Mead Howells.
IBM building designed by Mies / C.F. Murphy Associates
Marina City (the "twin-corncob" towers) designed by Bertram Goldberg.
Chicago Theater designed by C. W. & Geo. L. Rapp.
Cheesecake Factory is located on the ground floor of John Hancock Center.

East Coast Tour (4) - IIT

IIT-cover.jpg"Whenever technology reaches its real fulfilment, it transcends into architecture. It is true that architecture depends on facts, but its real field of activity is in the realm of significance. ~ Mies van der Rohe, 1950."

After half a century, IIT seeks some "breakthrough" for its already "obsolete" campus master-planned by Mies van der Rohe. Rem Koolhaas and Helmut Jahn have the opportunitiy to add something new to this campus which was thought to be one of the "ugliest" campuses and hasn't been added new buildings for years.

We first visited the construction site of Student Center costed $48.2 million designed by Rem Koolhaas, which is his first US project. The huge steel tube for reducing the noise generated by L, a line of elevated train, is the most eye-catching structure in the site. Student center is below the steel tube. The "zebra pattern" headband and the enlarged picture of Mies van der Rohe at one of the entries are another two striking features of the building. One of the tasks of the Student Center is to draw attention from State street. In this respect, it is successful. However, Koolhaas's design is allegedly critisized by some people, especially Mies' admirers I think, accusing his bold design doesn't follow (or respect?) Mies' principle/vision for IIT campus.(Correct me if I am wrong.) We weren't able to take a good look at how Koolhass deals with connection between his building and Mies' due to its still being under construction, therefore, I would hold my comment for now. But I like the idea of bringing some daring design into IIT campus.

IMG_0343s.jpg IMG_0344s.jpg IMG_0347s.jpg IMG_0348s.jpg
IMG_0349s.jpg IMG_0350s.jpg IMG_0353s.jpg IMG_0354s.jpg
IMG_0355s.jpg IMG_0358s.jpg IMG_0361s.jpg IMG_0371s.jpg

Helmut Jahn's State Street Village is a 5-story student dormitory, located at south of Koolhaas' Student Center, facing the west IIT campus across State street. The State Street Village consists of six individual buildings and has a partially curvy section. These buildings are faced with corrugated steel panels reminiscent of Koolhaas' steel tube. At the courtyards between buildings, the perforated steel panels serve as sunscreens. I like the sleek looking of blue glasses and the clear sight of mechanical equipments behind them, which I think demonstrates some sort of monumentality of technology, too.

IMG_0345s.jpg IMG_0362s.jpg IMG_0363s.jpg IMG_0364s.jpg
IMG_0366s.jpg IMG_0365s.jpg IMG_0367s.jpg

After visiting two new buildings, we then went visiting those buildings designed by Mies which comprise of most of IIT campus. One of the most famous buildings would be the Crown Hall which houses the architecture department. It's an elegant, graceful building, but unfortunately I only took pictures of its back and side elevations!!!!! (What an idiot!!! >.<) Owing to the gigantic steel girders and exterior steel columns, it's able to provide free and spacious plan for the interior. Another building we visited is the Paul V. Galvin Library. I like the exterior better than the interior. Walking at the IIT campus, I have to admit the buildings are somehow not that appealing to us. I remember Mies'd said "architecture reflects will of epoch"( I couldn't remember it clearly...) Maybe it's time to bring something new to revitalize the campus and to meet its current programmatic needs? (As they've already worked on that.)

East Coast Tour (3) - F. L. Wright's Home + Studio

wright-studio-cover.jpg WRIGHT'S HOME + STUDIO
& 2 HOUSES IN HISTORIC AREA
& ROBIE HOUSE
Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio are also located in Oak Park, where he practiced his profession for the first two decades of his career life from 1989 to 1909. Wright conceived the Prairie style of architecture in Oak Park where is also renowned for high concentration of 25(or 26?) of his Prairie-style works.
Wright sold his home and studio in 1925. The complex had severly deteriored by 1974. What we saw today is the result of 13-year restoration costed 3-million dollars managed by Frank Lloyed Wright Preservation Trust.
In the historic area of Oak Park, I've taken photos of 2 of Wright's Prairie-style houses. The one on the left is Frank W. Thomas House (1901).
The other one to the right is Arthur B. Heurtley House (1902)
IMG_0311s.jpg IMG_0313s.jpg
IMG_0323s.jpg Robie House is a masterpiece of Prairie Style. Frank Lloyd Wright described it as " the cornerstone of modern architecture." The long horizonal lines, far-cantilivered low-pitched roof are two striking features at the first sight of its appearance among others. Robie House is currently under renovation. (Again, correct me if I am wrong.) We didn't take a tour inside the house, although it's open to the public.

East Coast Tour (2) - Unity Temple

unity-cover.jpg

FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD
AND THE SERVICE OF MAN

We went to Unity Temple on 5 Sep 2003 , a Unitarian Universalist church and one of the most famous Frank Lloyd Wright's works, located in Oak Park, Illinois.
(Left: the entrance of Unity Temple)
IMG_0309s.jpg The Unity Temple was constructed between 1906 and 1908. (Correct me if I am wrong.) It's made of pour-in-place concrete which was rarely seen at the time it's being built and was probably adopted for the consideration of economy. In light of the bold, "cubist" design and the unified ornamental motifs consisting in the exterior columns and the interior, Wright made this concrete building to be "as dignified as more tradtional masonry." If you are interested in the brief history of Unity Temple, click on the small (yellow) picture to the right.
We were pretty excited about seeing the work of a master at first. But we were a little bit disapointed somehow at the maintainance of the interior although it's been under a certain of restoration and renovation. You could see some painting peeling off from the wall and the ceiling. The interior didn't strike me as "a place of awe" probably because of the evenly-distributed light coming down from the ceiling shafts and the bright interior color. Instead, it looks an intimate space due to the friendly scale.
I am glad that a masterpiece is still holding various activities almost one century after it's been built in spite of its slightly bad maintainance of the interior.
