The program of Aronoff Center is to re-organize 13,400 square meters of existing spaces and add 12,000 square meters of a library, theater, exhibition space, studio space, and office space. It's part of campus master plan of University of Cincinnati.
Aronoff Center sits on hillside/hilltop environment. On the plan it looks like a curvy structure attached to the existing buliding(s). According to Eisenman, his "vocabulary derives from the curves of the land forms and the chevron forms of the existing building; the dynamic relationship between these two forms organize the space between them." Well, I am not sure if I get what he tried to convey, but I do observe its abundance in visual complexity: tilting grid system/planes deviated, reproduced, deformed, and displaced.
The exterior of Aronoff Center is painted pastel pink and cyan. I konw some people like it and think it "adds subtlety and soften the angle" or they like it because it's not like the gray concrete color they saw every day. Some people dislike exterior color scheme. I, personally, don't prefer those colors, either. The quality of construction seems a litte rough in some parts of exterior.
The interior looks visually engaging to me at some angles. Part of reason is probably because I love complexity in architecture. Some people might find it disorienting. For me, I enjoy the concourse of different forces and the visual effects it brings as long as it's proportionally right.
You could see variety of comments about this building. However, I found that a lot of students and faculty there love this building. As Brenda Case Scheer, a professor of urban design and planning in a webpage puts it, "I like it. It's airy and spacious, visually engaging, and reasonably functional. But, most important, it is entertaining to talk about", maybe one of the most successful achievement of Aronoff Center is that it makes itself controversial and provides a lot of stories to tell?
